Oversize Loads

This boat hull was being transported from the West Country to the Hebrides.

It became evident upon inspection that although a legitimate abnormal indivisible load:

• The trailer/load was inadequately marked (no hazard flags or boards, no side marker reflectors on the trailer).
• The trailer/load was inadequately lit (a 5' 0" trailer board on a 10'+ load width, no side marker lights on the trailer).
• The over-run coupling on the trailer was so badly worn that brake operation was impeded.
• The driver had no rear view past the load.
• The driver had applied for, and been granted a movement order for the designated route M5, M6, M74 etc. however, he had diverted (without consent) to Corley Services to spend time with his girl-friend!

It transpired that the towing vehicle was fitted with a Tachograph.

After discussion it was agreed that this class of vehicle/trailer combination did not require an Operators license.

Operators' licenses and qualifications.

The driver was given the option of remaining on site until the defects/deficiencies were remedied, or be subject to a prohibition notice.
